Two Tasty, Affordable Whites including Prophecy Sauvignon Blanc

Prophecy Sauvignon BlancI remember when you could get the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc from that country’s iconic producers for less than $20 at retail. And very good, every day wines could be had for $8. Those days are long gone. But I’m encouraged that value still exists with wines such as the 2016 Prophecy Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough.

The New Zealand style of Sauvignon Blanc is refreshing to drink. The wines are generally moderate in alcohol and have excellent acidity, but not so much that they aren’t pleasant to drink without food.

It’s also a good wine to have on hand for pairing with food though. The combination of acidity, a touch of sweetness, fresh fruit—including citrus and green fruits—and those green notes of grass and herb are just the thing for tough to pair meals like green salads, fresh tomatoes and asparagus. It’s great with ceviche and fried fish too.

2016 Prophecy Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough, New Zealand 88+ 12.5% 750ml screwcap $14

The nose has the complex mix of fruit and herb you want from New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. It isn’t as intensely aromatic as some though, so it will appeal to a broader range of palates. Look for guava, lime, grapefruit, nectarine, jalapeno and green grass.

In the mouth, body is on the light side of medium and there’s just a touch of sweetness to balance the mouthwatering acidity. It drinks like a totally dry wine. Flavors include lime, guava, green apple candy, underripe pineapple, lemon, tart nectarine and green herb. Zesty and refreshing with attractive herbal elements and plenty of citrus, it will go very well with ceviche.

2015 Prophecy Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie IGT, Italy 87+ 12.5% 750ml screwcap $14

If you’re looking for something more mellow, perhaps to go with a meal of chicken breast or linguini in a light, white sauce, this Prophecy Pinot Grigio may do the trick. It’s gently aromatic with notes of peach, lemon, crisp yellow apple, and a hint of baking spice. Those same flavors appear on the palate, along with some chalky mineral.  It’s dry with medium body and a clean finish.

Both of these wines are widely distributed and should be easy to find.
